Daniel Rutte was born in Warendorf, Germany in 1986. He received his B.Sc. (Geology/Mineralogy) from the University of Mining and Technology Freiberg in 2008, where he studied metamorphism and deformation of units around the Jinsha Suture, Tibet. After a Fulbright exchange at the Colorado School of Mines and the University of California, Santa Barbara he finished his M.Sc. (Geosciences, Tectonics & Geochronology) in 2011, in Freiberg, too. His Master thesis explored the first-order Cenozoic structure of the Central Pamir of Tajikistan. From this grew a PhD project investigating the Cenozoic deformation, metamorphism and exhumation history of the Central Pamir Gneiss Domes and their cover units. To increase precision of 40Ar/39Ar dating for this study, Daniel worked on precise monitoring of neutron fluence gradients during sample irradiation using metallic foils.
Currently, Daniel is working on the proof of concept for a novel high-flux deuteron-deuteron fusion neutron generator for 40Ar/39Ar sample irradiation. The new method-compared to 235U fission neutron irradiation-is anticipated to significantly reduce recoil of activated 39Ar and activation of interfering Ar isotopes from Ca, Cl, and K. He is also acquiring fundamental cross-section data for activation reactions on 39K , works on intercalibration of geologic age standards, previously disregarded interference reactions and continues his work in the Pamir plateau.
